Gujarat, situated on the western coast of India, is a principal Maritime State endowed with favourable strategic port locations. The prominence of Gujarat is a virtue of having nearly 1600 kms long coastline, which accounts for 1/3rd of the coastline of India. The State acts a natural gateway to the rich land-locked northern and central hinterland. It has a vast and fertile hinterland comprising West, North, and Central India that constitutes a large amount to the total India trade. It has the longest coastline in India and has a multiple range of ports along with a wide range of cargos. Gulf of Cambay and Gulf of Kutch provides natural navigational safety and logistical advantage to northern and central parts of India and proximity to West Asia, Africa and Europe. This helps to capitalize on the strong manufacturing and trading base.

Gujarat is considered as a port hub of India. The state ranks first in cargo throughput amongst all Indian ports. Ports have contributed highly to Gujarat’s industrial growth with nearly 70 percent of its imports being used within the state. The volume of cargo handled by the Gujarat ports have been steadily rising and so has the capacity at the various ports. Industries like Petro-Chemicals, Metal, Cement, Fertilizer and Power have built their competitive edge from close proximity to ports for import of raw materials and export finished products after value addition. Favourable policies of the state government also helped the state in gaining private investors interest in port related activities.
